powerofreverb - shiny objects

Back in the day; in the mid 90's; I was a much younger man. My pursuit of a life of art and culture and love seemed equistation; galant.
I won the affection of many maiden's put I was always ill at ease. My art was dis-focused and under-exposed...(what has really changed).
I met my first wife in these days. We rushed through courtship and got to know each other while she was carrying our first child (that's her on the cover, she was 22 when that photo was taken; taken in Manhattan).

I met Scott Carol through a mutual friend Steve. Steve and I lived with Matt in a house with a half-pipe next door on Boulevard in Grant Park. This was when EAV just Heaping Bowl and Park Central Pizza.
Anyways, Scott and his girlfriend Becka would come over almost everynight; we'd drink and play loud music till like 3 in the morning while the girls hung out, tried to watch TV and made pot brownies while swiggin' 40's (JK)। We formed as Mercy Seat and made a ton of recordings on a real to real and on cassette recorders; one of those tracks made it to the powerofreverb demo; shiny object's.

It was called Norwigian Eyes... it uses rich echo guitar, nice and warm Marshall amplification; and a nice tambourine.

Here's the download

The other three cuts are tape loops and mixes done with my trusty Tascam 4-Track. I loved that thing!

**** Lost In Tribeca is a warm, fuzzy memory of Cindy and I and our vacations in Manhattan, holding hands and smoking Marlboro Reds while shopping in Soho and on the Lower East Side; before Brooklyn was hipster heaven of course. It was recorded in our trailer in Sugar Hill, GA. Joey's drums are slightly audible but perfect. The warm reverb from my 71 twin running thru a 90's Vox wah, is very nice. grab a cup of coffee; ouch it's too hot

- Lost In Tribeca is currently misssing, sorry - 3.20.10

Channel has interesting texture to it; it's got this great flute in it; and I want to think I overdubbed it with Cindy's Yamaha keyboard from the 80's. It sounds like Bradford could have influenced it but he probably was probably in High School and we hadn't met. big boom for bass (I would drop E on my jazzmaster and do bass overdubs with it).

dwnld it हियर

This last jam from the CDR was a song I used to skip over all the time in the car, too spooky; I thought. It's all about loneliness and obscurity... and this is while I was 26 married with a young son and wife, employed and promoted....hmmm
Of course these concepts still common in my work today. Of course now I am 37, divorced and unemployed; so go figure.

Surprisingly the track was titled All alone

Oh, ps... that email address listed on the inserts and covers; no bueno Haven't logged into it in years, couldn't even recall the passport. If your further interested communicate thru the blog.

One, last thing; if you think I'm nastalgizing about the past with what I said about Cindy and stuff; FU.

Turks

Why do I feel somewhat tramatized? It's only Thanksgiving day morning; nothing new...but wait, beyond the denial layer there is the sensation that every thanksgiving day sucks.. don't get me wrong, I'm totally appreciative and grateful but still, my family experience has been jaded and awkward, forever. I'm sure most of that is me, but why? Come on, I've always been a step-family member or a friend or a boyfriend or married in, I really don't know what it's like to feel solid and secure during the holidays. I'm probably better off just drinking and recording, but I'll probably buck this tangent and go to Joanna's family and see if I'm not completely the wierdo.

Here's our soundcloud account; just more ways to get the jams to you.

Choose Life

Originally recorded as standz, the chorus changed all that. Katie turned me on to Deuteronomy 30; and although I'm Hebrew (by birth), I felt His presence when I read it this morning. Good stuff.

The mastering wasn't as on as I'd like but we'll just bury that in the mystery jar. The chorus is clear and the sense of longing and waiting in the intro is present.

Sometimes often things happen out of sequence, usually by human intervention. But how do you undo what you did, how do you unfeel what you felt? By a mere walk away? By rigorous self-disciplinary action? Is that really what you want?

Redemption. Forgiveness.

Turn away. Repentance.

This version of call it a night is for Jojo...

Sweet Joanna who has been so good to me thru all my post-divorce changes. She really is something; you don't have people like her in your life often... better take good care of her.

Without further ado, here's Call it a night, for Jojo

Call it a night

It's not easy but it's probably, definitely worth it to...

Call it a night

Most of us got it all wrong. Dating is not about getting as much as we can as fast as we can, in fact it's not about getting as close as we can as fast as we can...it's about seeing if we can be, progressively, and if we cannot continue merely being, and most know each other, then only within the covenant of marriage.

I might post the vocoder-free version; keeping it here, initially, is making feel scratchy..

Ok, I'm working diligently on the list...

The OCt mixwit is fine and rocks balls.
Building an (Cosmic Electric on iLike) but I already don't know if I like that much... I want the flexibility to maintain a hierarchy, with 85 Lives as the label and Role/Truco/Cosmic Electric and such having sites within the site; maybe music-centric social networks aren't quite there. I'm currently building the iLike to mirror Cosmic Electric's Last.FM. (which I have yet to be able to play from iPhone; ugh)...

I can't wait to get another set of hands on this...

Confirmed

All the content is fine and happy now; here's my little maintenance to do:

  • I have to remaster Plentiful; Katie mentioned she couldn't here the words.
  • I have to listen to the OCt mixwit; see if it's you can here past tracks 5, if not fix it.
  • Find a more efficient way to stream; and save said streams (possibly iLike)
  • Oh yeah; utilize more QA and mastering skillfulness; we want to bring you only the best representation of the sound

!
Ok, so now all the Role stuff is sitting in it's own File freak account; I hope Truco/BSWS and everyone else can here their jams too... gez
Ok so the Kingdom States thing will play because I've created a lateral filefreak account (just till I could find a better solution)... New jams soon, while I work this out...

The things I do for you.

crosspolyfade

I met Sean Malachy thru flickr. He seen photos of my J.Mascis sig Jazzmaster and had technical questions, since he just got his.

We traded email several times then the idea came to me to see if maybe we could get a Postal Service-ish trade going. Made sense since he's all into the whole Kevin Shields sound, and I have yet to grow tired of that.

I initiated the idea, and this track crosspolyfade is the first exchange offering.

Sean, when you get this, add whatever you see fit and find a way to get it back to me in mp3 format; I'll share it with the silent masses that frequent 85lives.

You can download crosspolyfade here.

I could offer obvious suggestions but I almost never do that, I like collaboration to be unfiltered by works (other than logistical concerns); more intuitive (telepathic although I don't believe in such rubbish);less engineeristic.

buy kids

I spoke with Role and he told me a story about this track; he said he recorded one night while wrestling with a dying flu. He has been divorced for almost a year now but has not really managed to make much of a life post-marriage.
His children are only interested in what they can get from him; materially.
He said he had been having issues with self-worth since he doesn't have much monetarily to offer.

In so many words, he has eluded to ending his life during the upcoming holiday season.

I've tried to talk him out of it, telling him he has so much more to live for; that there are people that care about him and his luck will change.

He smiles back at me, emptily as he appears to have preconditioned himself to have these conversations; he thinks this is all so pretentious and that human suffering should end in success or self-elimination, but never in a mediocre existence.

He really doesn't care that he's risking an eternity in the lake of fire; all he sees is the current emptiness and distress that he says he's been in for so long.

Shake it off. Role, you can really get me down.

Here's his latest; buy kids

Role just keeps on working. Must be unemployed or something.

YES MASTER YES

NEWS FLASH:

It takes two to make everything go right.

Seriously, all my enthusiasm and love for sound still has me lacking; and that's an accountability partner, an equal, someone who can participate. Especially when it comes to mastering. Most great recordings involve two types of artistry; the musician (from whom the music flows), and the engineer (from whom the sound is carved).

Most of us can spill into the other and even get along decently doing both roles, but things flow so much better when you have at least another person.

I wonder why I don't.

Sigh The developers at flock really have to get together with the folks at blogger and fix the title translation thingie.

(अल्ल्मोस्त वर्जिन) इ अन्ना क्नोव translates to (almost virgin) I wanna know, which, if you haven't guessed it, is a another version of yesterday's track. I like this one better, I think you will too, it's more cohesive, you can definitely tap your fingers on your steering wheel at Freedom and Highland to this one.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

The two tracks have tons of flaws in them - by design. To hell with ultra slickness, show me some scars and nicks, from time to time; that's why the description says demo blogging...

PS - Poledo by Lou on you're living all over me started most of this.

वान्ना क्नोव

So it's a little after 6 in the morning; why am I editing in GarageBand? Way aren't I asleep; about to wake up and start the new day?

Because I'm unemployed.

Do I have a problem not having a day job? No. But truth be told, these tracks are not, yet paying the bills (FYI - nor are they designed to).
Basically, all of my creative outlet is currently unprofitable, existing as yet only to draw a neat from you or the random passerby.

PS - Yes Allen did the drums on this track, after all it is a Cosmic Electric track. His drumming is timely and important, very big beat; and he understands my scatter-beat stuff.

Anyways, check out I wanna know, let us know what you think!

I posted the Last.FM for Cosmic Electric on my flickr, my one output with regular visitors (most of which I consider friends)... but perhaps my voice flattens out too much and the music is not pop enough to really keep you coming back, commenting or any other for or reply... I dunno. All I can do is continue to upload content to this blog and the last.fm or whatever... in hopes that someone out there will like it to the point of comment - at least.

you can download this track if you want to

स्टील वेटिंग

Here's the third jam from the session at Allen's in Gwinnett. Dude doesn't really return calls in a patterned time frame but if he doesn't have any girl-scout activities he's down for some back beat.

Too bad that's the only time and the only thing. Allen, I believe there's quite an artist locked up inside you but only you can transition. It's so much better on this side, the food tastes better the women smile more and your interactions with all of life are hightened; but you won't know if you don't let go.

Still waiting is what most of us humans do; and mostly for action/reaction from other humans; ironically enough. Some of us humans get a bunch of action/reaction right off, the rest of us humans watch and wonder.

Others have to spin and toil, "pay your dues" we say to each other, wiping the sweat from our brow.

None of this rightly matters once we get our recompense... it's the poor blokes who labour and labour and never, in their time receive the fruits of their labors; the founding fathers, the pioneers, the martyrs... this jam;
goes to them, hopefully I am not one of them; hopefully I get to taste victory, success and honor amongst my peers before I die; if not, Lord count me in with the Still waiting

Decision

This number is sort of sobering lyrically. It's about the process of decision making and the real need to use wise judgment; particularly in relationships.

Musically it's a combination that's been bouncing in my head for years; sort of thin and not so exact but sentiment rich.

As always, Mr. Hewitt delivered percussionary blows of bounce and resonance.

GUIDE TO 85 Lives Vol. 1

I love how flock hasn't gotten the blogger translator right....

GUIDE TO 85 Lives
Vol. 1.

If you're new to this blog, note that all the content here is original and most of it given away freely; all that is asked is comments on the blog and grass root publicity. Do we want these jams to be huge like The Stones? OF COURSE!

... but that clearly is not our motive.

If this is your first time here, the editors have a label/tag you should notate.. yo gusto. Everything labeled/tagged yo gusto is really good stuff. Check it out.

That's one to grow on.

த வரித்

Hi.

You may not know this but I am a writer. At the tender age of 8 I wrote a screen-play about a secret suburban sect of crusty juggler's whose day job was to play martial art experts in Saturday afternoon local TV specials.
In the eight grade I graduated to advanced biological journalism , utilizing the scientific method and my keenly matured use of observation, I would study the mating habits of Gila Monsters and the importance of grasshopper defoliation period on southwestern blue grama-dominated range land.

In my freshman year of high school I discovered Jack Kerouac when introduced to The Subterraneans; it was then I knew I had to go East.

As a younger man, I began to experiment with semi-autobiographical phantasy and RPW (role play writing).

Weaved thru all of these stages was lyrical composition. I've always be musical and when I became a full on musician, my ability to write really added to my rhythmic prowess.

While attending the University of Phoenix online, I would have deliver 5000 word essays on topics such as Neo-American Capitalism and the significance of Nafta on the indigenous people of Baja; I secretly loved the essay based courses since I can wax significant and long on all topics; citing claims with proveable footnotes from academically astute resources.

Currently I'm writing as a means of documentation and a creative outlet, but doing it for profit and new friends would be quite well indeed

kidz

Kidz is sort of excessive and introspective and may not do a lot for most other folks, but then again, the music found on 85 Lives is all original and not really made for most other folks; it's sort if you like it, great, if you don't that's fine too, we (I) probably don't like what you do neither.

But not trying to be be rough or another (a fairly natural reaction to initial, intimate, public, self-exposure)

This track is uploaded purely for introspection, if you download it and rock it, that's really unusual and special as it was not intended for more than 3-5 ears.

OCt

MixwitMixwit make a mixtapeMixwit mixtapes

Here you go, enjoy OCt, in it's fullness!

This photo is embarrassing, but fortunately I haven't gotten this s*itty in quitesome time.

Didn't get any jams online yesterday but did make it to the Deerhunter show. Brought my bro Jimmy from small group. Kristen was so cool and is really my friend. Finally said hi to Jared and he was all smiles. Same with Josh. I think I'm sometimes to animated so Moses bugged a bit but he's super cool. Didn't say hi to Jay Retard but they definitely rocked. They remind me of Hüsker Dü... which is a total complement.

I missed the first half of Times New Viking's set but I could see what all the fuss is about. Very fresh. Pylon had the appropriate set space but played a bit long. There was this delightful dancing girl about 3 people away from me dancing and singing everyone of their songs; she might have been one of the members daughters.

Never did make it to the early voting. Wow. The most amazing girl just walked in and out of the coffee shop (Just looking... can't help it!) I've been haunting Inman Perk a bit lately.

Still need a 70k +/- day job. Gotta pay to play.
